Finding a game everyone can play together is harder than it sounds. Someone has an iPhone, someone has an old Android, one friend lives in another state, and your kid wants to join too. Half the “multiplayer” games in the stores only match you with strangers, and some make it surprisingly hard to invite the person sitting next to you.
This guide is about games that make playing with people you know easy. I sorted them by how you play: in the same room, online with friends, and cross-play with friends on consoles or computers. For each game I checked the price model and current availability on both stores in October 2026, and I note what the free versions hold back.
Quick picks: Minecraft for families, Among Us for groups of friends, Heads Up for a party in the living room, and Bloons TD 6 for two friends who want to cooperate instead of compete.
Before you start: local, online and cross-play
Three terms come up again and again, and they matter when choosing a game.
- Local play: everyone is in the same place. Some games use one phone passed around (pass-and-play), others connect phones over the same Wi-Fi.
- Online play: each person plays on their own phone from anywhere, usually by sharing a room code or adding each other as friends.
- Cross-play: iPhone and Android players can join the same game, and sometimes console or computer players too. This is the most important feature when your group has mixed devices.
Every game on this list supports iPhone and Android players together unless I say otherwise. If online games stutter for your group, our guide on how to reduce lag in mobile games covers Wi-Fi and phone settings that help.
Co-op games where you work as a team
माइनक्राफ्ट
Minecraft needs no introduction, but the mobile version deserves a note: it is the same Bedrock Edition that runs on Xbox, Switch, PlayStation and Windows computers, so friends on any of those can join one world. You can build together, survive together, or explore a server.
It is for families and friend groups of any age. The good part is flexibility: local play over the same Wi-Fi, online play through friends lists, and Mojang’s paid server subscription if you want a world that stays online when the host is offline. The weak part is that joining across platforms requires a free Microsoft account for everyone, and younger kids need a parent to set it up.
Price: $6.99 one-time on both stores, with optional Marketplace content and the server subscription as extras. Parents should look at our guide to parental controls for Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite before letting kids play online.
Tip: for two people in the same house, both phones on the same Wi-Fi is the simplest setup. The host opens the world, and the other player sees it under the Friends tab as a LAN game.
Bloons TD 6
Bloons TD 6 is tower defense with monkeys and balloons. In co-op mode, up to four players share a map, each placing their own towers on their part of the track while defending the same lives pool. It requires teamwork: one player builds anti-camo, another handles big blimps.
It is for two to four friends who want to work together rather than compete. The good part is the depth: dozens of towers, three upgrade paths each, and maps from easy to brutal. The weak part is that some heroes and boosts are in-app purchases, though you can earn most of the game by playing.
Price: $6.99 on both stores with optional in-app purchases. A Netflix edition also exists for subscribers.
Tip: agree on roles before the game. If everyone builds the same strong tower, the team gets wiped by camo or lead balloons that need specific counters.
Sky: Children of the Light
Sky is a gentle online adventure from the team behind Journey. You fly through dreamlike worlds, solve light puzzles and help other players. Holding hands with a friend lets you lead them through a level. There is no combat, no score, and chat opens up gradually as friendships grow.
It is for couples, long-distance friends and people who want a calm game to share. The good part is the atmosphere and the way the game encourages kindness. The weak part is the cosmetics shop and seasonal passes, which push hard, and the friendship system takes time to understand.
Price: free to download with in-app purchases for cosmetics and season passes. It supports cross-play with Switch, PlayStation and computer players.
Tip: the first time you meet a friend in the game, tap their character and spend a candle to become friends. Each friendship has its own tree of interactions (hand-holding, chat, high fives), and spending a few candles on it early makes playing together much easier.
Team games with friends online
Among Us
Among Us puts 4 to 15 players on a spaceship. Most are Crewmates doing tasks; one or more are Impostors who sabotage and eliminate the crew. When a body is found, everyone meets to discuss and vote someone off.
It is for friend groups who like talking, accusing and lying. The good part is how much fun the meetings are when everyone is on a voice call. The weak part is that it needs at least four or five people to work, and playing with strangers is much less fun than with friends. It is free with ads, which you can remove with a purchase.
Price: free with ads and in-app purchases for cosmetics. Cross-play with computer and console players is supported.
Tip: create a private game, share the room code in your group chat, and use a separate voice call (FaceTime, Discord, or a phone call). Set the rule that talking is only allowed during meetings.
Brawl Stars
Brawl Stars is a fast 3v3 arena game from Supercell. Matches take two to three minutes, and modes range from collecting gems to scoring goals. You can create a team with friends and play together against others, or run friendly matches in a private room.
It is for friends and teens who want quick, competitive sessions. The good part is how quickly matches start and how well the controls work on touch. The weak part is the progression: it is free with in-app purchases, and paying speeds up getting new brawlers. Kids especially can feel pressure to spend.
Price: free with in-app purchases and a paid Brawl Pass.
Tip: use the friendly game option in the Team menu to play against each other without affecting trophies. It is the best way to learn a new brawler.
Pokémon UNITE
Pokémon UNITE is a 5v5 team battle game: you pick a Pokémon, level it up during the match, and score points by dunking energy into the enemy goals. Matches last about ten minutes. It cross-plays with Nintendo Switch.
It is for Pokémon fans and friend groups of five. The good part is that teamwork matters more than individual skill. The weak part is the progression shop: Pokémon licenses and items can be earned slowly or bought.
Price: free with in-app purchases.
Tip: talk about roles before queueing. A team of five attackers loses to a balanced team every time.
Board games and party games
Ticket to Ride
The digital Ticket to Ride is the board game on your phone: collect train cards and claim routes between cities to complete your hidden destination tickets. You can play online in real time, in slower turn-based games over several days, against the computer, or in “couch play” with everyone sharing one device.
It is for families and board game fans. The good part is how well it teaches the rules. The weak part is that extra maps are paid expansions.
Price: $4.99 on both stores, with expansions as in-app purchases.
Tip: for family game night, use couch play on a tablet. It hides each player’s destination tickets between turns, so nobody peeks.
Codenames
The official Codenames app turns the clue-giving party game into turn-based multiplayer. One player is the Spymaster and gives one-word clues; teammates guess which words on the board belong to their team. You can play with friends or with online opponents, and you can run several games at once.
It is for word-game fans and long-distance friend groups. The good part is that it is a one-time purchase with no ads. The weak part is that turn-based play is slower than the real board game, where everyone is shouting across the table.
Price: $4.99 on both stores, with the Duet expansion as an optional purchase. If you like this kind of game, see our list of word games like Wordle.
Heads Up
Heads Up is the charades game you hold to your forehead. Friends shout clues; you tilt the phone down for a correct answer and up to pass. It records a video of the round, which is often the best part.
It is for parties, family gatherings and road trips. Everyone uses one phone, so only the host needs the app. The weak part is that the free decks run out quickly, and the best decks cost extra.
Price: $1.99 on the App Store; free to download on Google Play. Both sell extra decks as in-app purchases.
Jackbox games (phones as controllers)
Jackbox Party Packs run on a TV, computer or console, and everyone in the room plays on their own phone by opening jackbox.tv in the browser and typing a room code. No download is needed on the players’ phones. Games include drawing, trivia and joke-writing.
It is the best option for groups of 4 to 8 in one room. The weak part is that someone needs to buy a pack (sold per pack on consoles and computer stores), and it is not a phone-only setup.

Questions about playing mobile games with friends
Can iPhone and Android players play together?
Yes, for every game in this guide. The thing to check is how you add friends: some games use a room code (Among Us), some use an in-game friend code (Brawl Stars, Sky), and some use a platform account (Minecraft uses a Microsoft account).
What is a good free game to play with friends?
Among Us if you have five or more people, Brawl Stars for groups of three, and Sky for two people who want something calm. All three are free, though each sells cosmetics or upgrades. For kids, check our best Roblox games list too, since many of those are built around playing with friends.
Which games can we play on one phone?
Heads Up, Ticket to Ride’s couch play, and Polytopia’s pass-and-play mode all work on a single device. Polytopia is covered in our guide to the best strategy games on mobile.
A simple game night setup
For a group in the same room, I’d start with Heads Up for warm-up laughs (one phone, no setup), then switch to Jackbox on the TV for the main event, since everyone can join from a browser.
For friends in different cities, set up a voice call first, then play Among Us in a private room. For two people who want to keep playing together over weeks, Minecraft or Bloons TD 6 co-op are the ones that hold up best over time. Both cost $6.99, once, and they last.
